The making process of a babushka on canvas..

starting..

Just to be certain that every babushka will have the same shape, I've made a model -a transparency- and with the use of that I draw the outline on the canvas.

After painting the background a neutral yellowish colour, I draw a circle for the head. I found the top part of the wooden babushka as the perfect circle size to do this... : )

I have already decided to create a PUNK babushka, so I did a quick sketch of the main idea I had in my mind and picked a few pictures from the web to use as a reference.

I always start to illustrate the basic lines of the head, because I want to have the 'face'!

Again, I use the parts of the wooden babushka to draw circles for the basic lines of the hands and figures. I have to confess that what follows from there is the work of pure improvisation!

And after adding a few more details, I have my Punk Babushka! The canvas size is 24 x 30 cm.

I have done eleven designs so far and hoping to do three more. All the works will be exhibited and available to buy at the CheapArt Show on the 1 - 23 December, in Athens.

I will post them here for all of you that won't be able to come to the show!

I've been working on a really fun project lately that involves the iconic image
of the Russian doll, Babushka.

My intention is to create a typology of women characters that we all are very familiar with.
The designs have the same shape (the butter peanut one!!) clear - simple lines and bold colours.

The project consists of unique works illustrated directly on canvases with marker pens.

All the designs will be available to buy at the CheapArt 17 show on the 1 - 23 December 2011, in Athens. I will write more on that in a week or so...

The 29th Athens Classic Marathon, 2011

Cheerfulness on the roads of Athens by thousands of people whoparticipated on the Marathon today.

Amongst them were the pupils of St. Lawrence College who ran theconcurrent 5 & 10 Kilometres road races!!

Postcards from Europe

A few days back I discovered on the web the project Postcards from Europe, where artists and designers from across Europe create post cards for the place they live and work and I couldn't resist myself but wanting to be involved.

The image has to be real of the relationship to our enviroment -no ordinary tourist post card. And I thought that my illustration of my home, Spetses Island, will be a perfect postcard to send.

Here's a retro postcard of Spetses Isl. from my collection, showing a part of the main town near Saint Mamas. (must be from the '80s)

* Selected works will be exhibited in the UK in October and at the end of the exhibition each participating artist will receive the 'postcard' of another artist. Isn't it cool!!

Summer Exhibition on Sifnos Island

Last week I was in Sifnos to attend the opening of the shared show that’s taking place from 2 – 21 August at the Giomisti Kefali Gallery - part of the multi functional Cyclades Place. Four of my artworks are being on display amongst those by E. Mitala, St. Polenakis and others.

This was also the first time I’ve been to Sifnos and it was very relaxing and such an enjoyment to walk around the island discovering its beauty, taking pictures and sunbathing under the sun! Nice time!!

The Fish That Ate The Ocean Clover - on display

This is my art-book, an experimental book project, which is currently on display at the exhibition Book Art at the Athens School of Fine Arts at the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens.

The book plays with the idea of convention. The plain cover creates a rather indifferent effect and passive feeling, which the author aims to change by increasingly triggering the reader's curiosity while s/he turns the pages. The book becomes the 'fish' and the fish becomes the 'book'. Inside of it lie the words of "The Ocean Clover", which actually is a playful interpretation of the greek poem "The Sea Clover" by Odysseas Elytis. It has been printed digitally in only 12 copies! The pages were cut and bound by hand.

Very limited copies are available to buy on the museum's art shop.

Book Art at the Athens School of Fine Arts

In spite of the times, the Athens School of Fine Arts Graphic Design Studio is set on gathering together o,ti / whatever it's got: ideas, words, images, pages, books. Teachers, students and fellows, working together on a large-scale installation -a book running through the rooms of the Stathatos Mansion, inviting the visitor to read / explore it.

As one of the participants of the show, I'm very proud and really really excited of this impressive show. It records an important aspect of Greek artistic production in the books created in the Graphic Design Studio by students past and present.

A show for art-lovers, but most definitely for bibliophiles, too!!

Be Mine - Exhibition

Dear all, if you're in Athens these days and would like to see my work in person, get along to Bartessera between 7 - 26 Feb. 2011.
My work will be on display there as part of the group exhibition Be Mine with 10 other visual artists!! The exhibition is about contemporary mythologies and representations of romantic expectation.

The exhibition looks on the skepticism of deceived romance, the need for a new meaning in the repetitiveness of erotic game, the tensions drawn within the allure of being liked and the desire to know who you are. Objects, photographic works, video and paintings flirt with pop culture in order to communicate the ambivalent equilibriums of erotic declaration.

Tonight I dreamed..

I was invited by Roger Omar to select and illustrate a kid's dream from the wonderful and utterly inspiring project elmonstruodecoloresnotieneboca. Roger collects dreams written by kids in different countries, to be illustrated by artists.

This is my interpretation of Tofol's dream from Spain: "Tonight I dreamed that kids in school were mosquitoes, spiders, flies... and I was a carnivorous plant and ate everyone who was bad at me."

A few weeks ago I visited the Renaissance Collection at The National Gallery. While I was looking at the portraits I wondered what these people could possibly have looked like when they were children. And then, how in correlation their pictures would have looked. Popular nursery rhymes came to mind and I started to correlate rhymes with imaginary pictures as the portraits and my mood inspired me.

I thoroughly enjoyed this 'game'.

Here is an imaginative combination of Andrea Solario's The Man with a Pink with Baa, baa, black sheep.

The Childhood Project

I am currently taking part in The Childhood Project at the City of Athens Cultural Centre Melina. The exhibition showcases work of a diverse range of contemporary artists presenting photography, illustration, video, installation, sculpture and painting. As part of the project an auction will take place on 17 February involving most of the works and the amount to be collected will be offered to the MITERA Foster Home.

Here's my doll, 70 x 100 cm, printed digitally on a William Turner 190 g/m2.
